The Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) has confirmed that six popular food and beverage outlets frequently visited by Muslims are not halal-certified. The outlets listed are Johnnys, Black Canyon, Dolly Dim Sum, Mr Dakgalbi, Bungkus Kaw Kaw, and Ayam Penyet Best, with the exception of four specific Ayam Penyet Best outlets.
The announcement, dated September 2, quickly went viral on social media, sparking widespread concern among Muslim consumers. JAKIM released this information in response to a query on the halal status of these eateries, which was submitted through the department's public complaints system.
Following the announcement, Dolly Dim Sum clarified its halal certification status in a statement today. The popular dim sum eatery revealed that while its central kitchen, which supplies ingredients and semi-prepared food to all its branches, has received halal certification from JAKIM, its individual outlets are still in the process of obtaining their certifications. "As mentioned in our announcement on August 1, we are also in the process of obtaining halal certification for each of our branches," the statement said, emphasizing that securing certification for its central kitchen was a crucial first step in this process.
According to FMT, the management of Johnnys and Black Canyon also responded to the announcement. They confirmed that their restaurants have yet to receive halal certification but reassured customers that all ingredients used, including eggs, poultry, and other raw foods, are sourced from halal-certified suppliers. "These certificates can be found at the outlets," the statement read. The management also stressed that no alcohol is used in the preparation of their food and drinks and assured that they are working towards obtaining halal certification for both their central kitchen and individual outlets.
Similarly, Ayam Penyet Best clarified that its central kitchen has been halal-certified since 2012, with the halal certificate for its business premises held by Smart Green Trading Sdn Bhd, effective from 2021. The brand added that it is in the process of securing halal certification for its remaining outlets in stages. "We hope this clarification addresses any concerns, and we thank you for your trust in us," Ayam Penyet Best stated.
JAKIM's announcement has prompted these food and beverage outlets to take swift action in addressing their halal certification status, reflecting the importance of such certification to their Muslim clientele.
