Disney's "Inside Out 2" has lost ground to the Chinese hit "Ne Zha 2" as the highest-grossing animated movie ever made!
Since its release last month, "Ne Zha 2" has packed theaters in China and already grabbed the title of the highest box office release in the nation.
When the first "Ne Zha" was released in 2019, it became the highest-grossing animated movie in China at the time.
"Ne Zha 2" tells the tale of a rebellious young deity who uses his powers to battle formidable foes after his village is destroyed.
Citing ticketing website Maoyan, state news agency Xinhua said on Tuesday that the fantasy epic has made over 12.319 billion yuan, or over $1.72 billion.
After its release last year, "Inside Out 2" made $1.7 billion, which loses to "Ne Zha 2" by a small margin.
Based on the novel "Investiture of the Gods" from the 16th century, "Ne Zha 2" capitalises on the rising demand for goods based on classic Chinese tales as well as the nation's pride in its technological advancements.
