Announced a few hours ago, was the death of Queen Elizabeth II's beloved husband, His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

Passing peacefully at Windsor Castle, the Duke was said to have left the hospital after a month-long stay, for treatment of a pre-existing heart condition, in March this year.

He married a young Queen Elizabeth in the year 1947, five years before she became a queen, and together they stayed married for 70 full years. They then went on to have four children, eight grandchildren as well as 10 great-grandchildren.

The longest serving consort in British history, he was born on the 10th of June 1921, and spent his long life inspiring many, leaving quite a mark in history. 

At the age of 18, he joined the Royal Navy as a cadet, and served in the Indian Ocean as well as the Mediterranean during WW2. Renouncing his Greek and Danish royal titles, he then took on the surname Mountbatten and became a British subject.

Throughout life, he was a modernizer within the monarchy. He orchestrated the first royal walkabout, and his concern for young people even went so far to inspire him to create, the 'Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme'.

Supporting more than 800 charities and good causes, he also spent his moments showing an undying commitment to his dearest wife. 

Describing him as her "constant strength and stay", he gave up his career in the Navy, and spend his life supporting her best he could, in her role as monarch.
