Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown started, we are mainly staying indoors. As we are shaded from the sun as we stayed at home, do we need to apply sunscreen?
The answer is: YES!
As we are constantly sitting in front of screens, be it computer, TV, or phone, we are exposing our skin to skin-damaging rays. According to dermatologists, we are exposed to UVA, UVB rays, and blue light even if we are indoors. Moreover, seats beside an open window are also creating opportunities for us to be exposed to sunlight.
Thus, it’s advisable to wear sunscreen indoors to prevent the production of pigmentation and breakdown of collagen. The detrimental effect of not wearing sunscreen ranged from inflammation, forming of age spots to skin cancer.
How often and when do we need to apply?
If we are heading outdoors, it is recommended to apply the sunscreen for 30 minutes BEFORE going outside. Reapplication of sunscreen is needed every two hours or right after sweating and swimming. Sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and water-resistant formula is needed for outdoor usage.
For indoor usage, dermatologists suggested reapplying every two to six hours based on the instruction of the product. Sunscreen with a minimum of SPF 15 is suitable for indoor usage.
Skin aging happens when we are least aware of it. Take care of your skin from harmful rays through daily sunscreen use even when we are indoors!
