Sarawak was shaken by two separate crocodile attacks yesterday (Dec 19), which tragically left one man dead and another missing, authorities reported.
According to NST, the first incident occurred in Kampung Sampun Tebun, Asajaya, where a 41-year-old man named Gindek Julau was attacked and killed by a crocodile. According to the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department, they received a distress call at 4.42 pm and quickly dispatched a response team to the area.
Tragically, Gindeks remains were later found in Sungai Sampun by his elder brother at approximately 4.30 pm. Authorities have since confirmed the cause of death as a crocodile attack, sparking concerns among local residents about safety in the area.
In another incident reported the same day, an Indonesian man named Salim went missing after a suspected crocodile attack near the Asean Bridge in Kuala Baram. Lutong Fire and Rescue Station Chief Henry Jugah said the department received an emergency call at 4.50 pm regarding the attack.
Salim was reportedly fishing with a friend along the Sungai Baram riverbank when the attack occurred. Despite the immediate launch of a search-and-rescue operation covering a one-kilometer radius, the search was called off at 6.30 pm due to low visibility.
The operation is set to resume today (Dec 20), with authorities continuing their efforts to locate Salim.
