We've heard about rooftop gardens, but ever heard about rooftop farms? No? Same. This is the first time and it is as intriguing as it sounds.
On 1 Utama Shopping Center's rooftop, there is a small eco-farm full of fresh veggies and fruits. Fresh Growcer is an initiative by Emil Jihad and Tony Yang to allow customers to choose their own veggies which are all grown in an aquaponic system. Most importantly, their crops are 100% pesticide free.
They converted a small portion of the parking space on the rooftop of the mall into an urban vegetable patch.
The entrance of Fresh Growcer is where you can see the display of fresh veggies and fruits. While on the left is the aquaponics garden. The water from the garden collects in a fish pond, where orange carps reside.
This eco-farm offers 20 types of vegetable products which are mainly Asian and European leafy vegetables. Some of them include spinach, kale, lettuce greens and mustard leaves.
Here's the best part of the farm. Customers can actually choose the vegetables they wish to buy, fresh from the ground! And the price starts from RM1! What a treat. Cant get any fresher than that.
Another fun fact about Fresh Growcer is that they are self-sustainable. "Many urban gardens use glow lamps, but we don't need those because up here, we get all the sunlight we need," Emil explained.
Emil hopes that Fresh Growcer will become an eco-tourism center where people can visit and learn about sustainable farming, and at the same time do some fresh veggies and fruit shopping.
