A day after Inside Scoop's Pei Pa Koa also known in Malaysia as Cap Ibu dan Anak cough syrup, ice cream flavour was announced, KKM steps in.
On the recommendation of the health ministry, Inside Scoop, was ordered to immediately stopped selling its Pei Pa Koa cough syrup-flavored ice cream.
The flavour which was only available for a limited time, was also listed for purchase online.
The company said on Facebook and Instagram that customers who placed online orders for the ice cream flavor will receive a refund.
"We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused and value your understanding", the statement read.
According to the health ministry, the cough syrup is approved by the Drug Control Authority to treat coughs and sore throats, but it is not recommended for use by expectant mothers.
Inside Scoop says their rendition of the flavour, uses actual pei pa koa as well as vanilla bean swirls and calls it the 'perfect soothing refreshment you would not want to miss.' - well.
Section 13B(2) of the Food Act 1983 forbids the manufacture or sale of any contaminated food. According to a statement, those found guilty of the crime could spend a maximum of RM20,000 in fines, five years in jail, or both.
The ministry directed the removal of all product advertisements and an immediate stop to sales at all establishments serving Pei Pa Koa flavored ice cream.
They have also emphasised further for food industry players to be more responsible and abide by the Food Act of 1983 or any other relevant rules.
Popular for its herbal qualities and nice taste that even kids can easily drink, the herbal concoction is quite favoured publicly.
