In a dramatic attempt to evade authorities, a Bangladeshi man found himself trapped while trying to escape through a bathroom window in a flat in Kampung Nisan Empat, Terengganu, last night. The man, reportedly in his 40s, was part of a group of 35 foreign nationals residing in the flat, all of whom are employed at construction sites in Marang and Kuala Nerus.
According to NST, the incident unfolded during an immigration operation led by the Terengganu Immigration Department, in collaboration with the National Security Council and the National Registration Department. The raid began around 9 p.m., with officers sealing all exits of the building to prevent any possible escape.
According to Mat Amin Hassan, Deputy Director of the Terengganu Immigration Department (Control), several foreigners attempted to flee, using the emergency staircases and elevators, but were unsuccessful as the exits were tightly monitored by authorities. The trapped mans predicament added another layer of tension, with immigration officers having to bring in a ladder to free him from the window frame.
In total, 218 foreigners were screened during the operation, including two teenagers. Of those checked, 35 individuals, aged between 15 and 53, were detained for various immigration offenses, such as lacking valid travel documents. The detainees were subsequently transported to the Ajil Immigration Depot for further processing.
The Terengganu Immigration Department has since launched an investigation into the case under Sections 6(1)(c) and 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act, which address issues related to the failure to produce valid travel documents and overstaying, respectively.
In addition to detaining the foreign nationals, the department issued notices to two local residents, requiring their assistance in the ongoing investigation. Authorities emphasized their intent to take action against any individuals found to be employing or sheltering undocumented migrants.
"The Immigration Department will take action against anyone found to employ and shelter undocumented migrants," Mat Amin stated, underscoring the department's commitment to tackling illegal immigration in the region.
