Shitsui Hakoishi, a 108-year-old barber from Nakagawa, Tochigi Prefecture, has officially been recognized by Guinness World Records as the world's oldest female barber. Her remarkable achievement was celebrated last Wednesday when she received the recognition certificate at a local establishment, surrounded by her neighbors and loyal customers.
Reflecting on her life, Hakoishi expressed gratitude despite the many challenges she has faced. "Life has been full of hardships since I was young, but I am truly happy," she shared.
Hakoishi's journey as a barber began at just 14 years old when she started training at a barbershop in Tokyo. By 1936, she had earned her barber's license and, together with her husband who was also a barber opened their own shop.
However, their business was tragically destroyed during an air raid, forcing the couple to relocate to her hometown. After losing her husband during the war, Hakoishi persevered, opening a small barbershop in her home while raising their two young children.
Even at 108, Hakoishi continues to practice her craft with dedication. She remains passionate about her work, cutting hair for customers who seek her outsome traveling from far distances just to have their hair trimmed by the legendary barber. Despite knee pain, she refuses to slow down.
"Some people come from far away to see me, so I want to keep going for as long as I can," she said.
Beyond her work, Hakoishi has also been part of history in other ways. In March 2021, she proudly carried the Olympic torch as part of the Tokyo Olympic torch relay, proving that age is no barrier to achieving great things.
Her dedication, resilience, and love for her craft serve as an inspiration to many, making her not just a record-holder but also a symbol of perseverance and passion.
