ICYMI: Rejoice Japanese Manga Fans! 'ONE PIECE' Is Setting Sail In 2023 & Pirates, Assemble! Join The Straw Hats In The Epic ONE PIECE Teaser
Netflix has debuted a brand new trailer for its upcoming live action adaptation of the anime One Piece, alongside a letter from manga series creator Eiichiro Oda.
The nearly three-minute trailer gives us a good look at the key members of the Straw Hats, including Monkey D. Luffy (Iñaki Godoy), Roronoa Zoro (Mackenyu), Nami (Emily Rudd), Sanji (Taz Skylar), and Usopp (Jacob Romero). Sorry, Chopper fans.
We also get some plot establishment for those not yet initiated into One Piece: Luffy, an aspirational pirate with stretchy limbs, pulls together a haphazard crew to pursue the legendary treasure "one piece," which will bestow on its owner the title "King of the Pirates."
Alongside the new trailer, One Piece series creator Eiichiro Oda released a letter sharing some thoughts on the upcoming series ahead of its August 31 debut. It reads:
"I'll say this. There were no compromises on this show! There was so much that went into it – all of the efforts by the actors, the building of the world and the costumes, presenting things in a way that can only be done in live action, the dialogue – and the entire process of so many people putting their heads together was a festivity in and of itself. The producers and the crew are pros at live action, and frankly, they're One Piece superfans too. By now I just love the production team and cast so much that I can't wait for them to get the acclaim they deserve from everyone around the world."
