In a distressing case of domestic violence, a man was sentenced to a month in jail after he admitted to hitting his wife six times in a heated argument sparked by a simple request: a stop for food. The incident occurred on September 19 around 2: 20 pm at Jalan Lukas, Taman Soga in Johor, according to reports from the New Straits Times.
The argument began when the man's wife asked him to pull over at a shop to buy some food. Ignoring her request, he allegedly became agitated, leading to a verbal altercation that escalated into violence. According to case details, he struck her right arm six times during the confrontation. Police were notified after the wife filed a report against her husband, leading to his subsequent arrest and charges of assault.
During his court appearance at the Batu Pahat Magistrates Court, the man, who worked as a contractor, was unrepresented by legal counsel and expressed remorse. Breaking down in tears, he appealed for leniency, stating that he deeply regretted his actions and wished to reunite with his family after 40 days in custody.
"I still love my wife and my child. After 40 months of being in custody, I want to see them. I can no longer bear staying in jail," he told the court.
The court sentenced him to one month in jail following his guilty plea. However, since his sentence was backdated to the day of his arrest on September 20, he was released immediately.
In a poignant statement read in court, the wife expressed her fear and frustration over her husband's recurring violent behavior. "I'm scared of him. I don't want to live with him anymore. I don't understand why I am often beaten without reason," she wrote. Her words underscore the toll that repeated acts of violence had taken on her, highlighting her struggle with his explosive temper and her hopes for a peaceful life free from violence.
