WATCH: RM457 For Teh Tarik & Char Kway Teow?! Malaysian Shocked By California Food Prices

Malaysian YouTuber and radio personality Chloe Tan Jia Tong recently found herself doing a double-take, at her receipt.

While exploring California, Chloe paid a visit to a Michelin-rated Ipoh Kopitiam in search of a comforting taste of home. But instead of just indulging in familiar flavours, she was hit with a dose of sticker shock: a bill totalling USD95.25 (around RM414) for a simple Malaysian meal.

What is going on with these prices? she asked her viewers, holding up the bill in disbelief. The order? Dishes most Malaysians would consider regular hawker fare: curry chicken rice, char kway teow, chicken rice, stir-fried vegetables, and a glass of teh tarik. Back in Malaysia, the same spread would typically cost less than USD15 (around RM65).

And this wasn't a one-off.

Throughout her food tour in California, Chloe continued sharing her surprise at the cost of eating out. A basic breakfast of two eggs costs USD12.50 (RM54.35), while a more elaborate spread, complete with turkey bacon, avocado tartine, smoked salmon omelette, and coffee, racked up to USD61.20 (RM266.09), including the mandatory 18% tip.

"Tipping isn't optional here," she reminded her audience, pointing out a major difference between Malaysian and American dining culture. "In the US, tips are part of a server's income."

One of the most outrageous items she came across? A strawberry smoothie inspired by Hailey Bieber, priced at USD20 (about RM87). In Malaysia, that amount could easily cover multiple meals at a food court.

Chloe's viral video isn't just sparking laughter and disbelief, it's also prompting deeper conversations about global food prices, cultural differences, and the high cost of authenticity overseas. While Malaysians may be used to affordable hawker delights, the same dishes can come with a hefty price tag in the West, especially when marketed as "authentic" or "Michelin-rated."

Her experience serves as a reminder that for many Malaysians abroad, a simple craving for home can come with an unexpectedly high cost, both emotionally and financially.
