A man died after shattering his limbs when the car he was driving suddenly exploded here in Jalan Pintu Geng, Kampung Sireh, Kota Bharu, this evening.
The cause of the explosion is still undetermined with some news portals reporting that it was struck by lightning and some stating that it was because the victim was carrying firecrakers with him in the vehicle.
The victim who was driving a Proton Iswara Aeroback car was also thrown 20 meters from the scene and his vehicle was broken into two pieces.
Kelantan police chief Datuk Shafien Mamat said that five other vehicles that were at the scene also caught on fire and four other victims were injured in the blast.
According to Berita Harian, a witness to the incident, Mohd Khairul Anwar Mohd Zin, 42, said he heard a loud bang that sounded like a bomb and immediately ran out of the restaurant only to see several cars scattered around the scene with one of them on fire.
"I heard voices asking for help from some other survivors, some even ran to save themselves in a bloody state."
"It was even more shocking when the victim's body was apparently thrown against the wall of my restaurant, probably due to the impact of the strong explosion," he said when met at his restaurant near the scene.
Preliminary police investigations did not rule out the possibility that the explosion was caused by the vehicle carrying firecrackers. However, further investigations are still underway.
Police are asking eyewitnesses of the incident to come forward to provide information and assist in the investigation.
