A top university student in China has been sentenced to death for brutally killing his own mother, in one of the most high-profile cases the country has recently seen.
26-year-old Wu Xieyu was found guilty of killing his mother by way of inflicting a blunt force trauma to her head using a dumbbell, before wrapping her corpse in 75 layers of bedsheets and plastic film. The police force was only able to find her body months later.
According to Xieyu's own personal statement, he murdered his mother "out of love" claiming that he no longer wished for his mother to live a miserable, meaningless life after the death of his father a few years back.
Aside from the murder, Xieyu managed to trick his relatives into borrowing him 1.4 million yuan (RM 900K+) which he spent whilst on the run.
Despite his full confession, the court ruled that Wu Zieyu was deserving of the death penalty.
