A heart-wrenching road accident turned a family visit into a tragedy when two siblings lost their lives while on their way to visit their late father's grave. The incident occurred on the Lebuh Sungai Udang-Paya Rumput-Ayer Keroh (SPA) highway near Stadium Hang Jebat in Krubong, Melaka, on the afternoon of September 23.
Melaka Tengah district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Christopher Patit, confirmed the victims as 18-year-old Muhammad Amirul Hazlin and his 5-year-old sister, Nur Afiqah Sofea. The siblings were on a motorcycle, headed to Bertam Hulu to pay respects at their late father's grave, with their mother following closely behind on a separate motorcycle.
According to authorities, the accident occurred at approximately 6.15 pm when Muhammad Amirul, who was riding a Demak DV110 motorcycle, collided with a roll-on roll-off (roro) bin that was placed by the roadside. The bin, which was apparently not visible to the rider, led to a devastating collision.
According to Sinar Harian, the mother, who witnessed the tragedy unfold from behind, was left helpless as both children sustained severe injuries in the crash. Emergency services rushed the siblings to Melaka Hospital, but despite efforts to save them, Muhammad Amirul succumbed to his injuries at 7.40 pm, while his younger sister, Nur Afiqah, passed away later at 12.30 am.
The heartbreaking loss of both children on what was meant to be a day of remembrance for their father has deeply affected the local community. Authorities are currently investigating the incident under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving. The police have identified the owner of the roro bin and are gathering statements from witnesses who saw the accident.
This tragic accident serves as a grim reminder of the dangers on the road and the unpredictable nature of such incidents.
