A recent report by Kosmo! has exposed the alarming presence of a "dark side" community on social media platforms, where users are creating and sharing explicit content, including nude photographs and sex videos. The community, which is believed to comprise individuals from diverse backgrounds and careers, is using platforms like X and Telegram to market their services.
According to the report, some women are selling photos of their private parts for as little as RM12, while others are charging their "fans" RM100 just to reply to their messages. The account owners, who often hide their faces in images or videos, are exploiting the platforms to promote their immoral activities.
The Malaysian Cyber Consumers Association president, Sirajuddin Jalil, has expressed concern over the growth of this community, warning that if left unchecked, it will expose more teenagers, children, and school students to explicit content. He highlighted that some users are even offering prostitution services through Telegram.
The issue is not new in Malaysia. In recent months, there have been reports of people selling "Made in Malaysia" pornography on social media. Moreover, several individuals have been charged with spreading lewd videos or offering prostitution services on these platforms.
In response to these concerns, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has announced that all social media and online messaging platforms with at least eight million users in Malaysia must apply for a license from the government starting August 1. The license requirement will be enforced from January 1, 2025.
This move is seen as a step towards creating a safer online ecosystem. It is essential for social media platforms and online messaging services to take responsibility for the content being shared on their platforms and ensure that they do not facilitate illegal activities.
The recent sentencing of a social media account owner who offered prostitution services on Telegram is a welcome step toward holding individuals accountable for their actions. It is crucial that law enforcement agencies continue to crack down on these illegal activities and work with social media companies to prevent the spread of explicit content.
As we navigate the digital age, it is essential that we remain vigilant about the potential risks and dangers posed by social media. By working together, we can create a safer online environment for all users.
