Search and rescue efforts are still ongoing in Kampung Tanjung Kiri, Kedah, after a mother and son were swept away by floodwaters earlier this morning.
Videos shared by witnesses showed 46-year-old Salmah Mat Zain and 19-year-old Muhammad Rosman Rohaidi attempting to wade through the strong currents in a bid to return home.
According to the villagers, Salmah- a single mother- and Rosman -who has a disability-, rode over 3km on their motorcycle just to buy nasi lemak as the main road had been flooded.
However, instead of resuming their journey on a safer route, the duo left the vehicle behind at a villager’s house and began wading through the floodwaters.
Horrified onlookers can be heard calling out for the duo to turn back, but to no avail as the currents had gotten stronger.
The alarming incident then took a turn for the worse after Salmah apparently lost her footing halfway through, causing her son struggling to pull her back.
They were last seen clinging to a rubber tree, before being swept away.
