Recognized by UNESCO as Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, wayang kulit or shadow theater is a traditional puppet performance, originated from Indonesia that has long planted its roots in Malaysia. The mastermind behind every performance, known as Tok Dalang; would orchestrate stories often around the theme of good vs evil.

Our very own Tok Dalang, Pak Cu, otherwise known as our living national treasure, is one of the very few Chinese descendants of the dying art. Albeit the advances of technology threatening to end its very existence, wayang kulit prevails still, thanks to Pak Cu's profound perseverance towards preserving the cultural tradition. Although none of his children share his passion, hope is not entirely absent as his grandson shows promising interest in the cultural heritage he's so dearly attached to.

Maxis has unveiled an inspiring short film, Layar Harapan, that is intended to shine a spotlight on Pak Cu's legacy in persevering the art of wayang kulit and the importance of empowering a culture that has been embedded deeply into our national identity. This shows that with the proper use of modern-day technology and social media exposure, dying art and cultures could still prevail and prosper. Watch Below: (Warning: you may cry!)
This Maxis and iPhone collaboration represents the endless possibilities of what an incredible smartphone (and a good internet connection!) can do to get an important message across. Particularly in Pak Cu's case, his grandson's initiative in using technology to promote Pak Cu's wayang kulit performance has helped in keeping the dying art of wayang kulit to continue burning bright.

Culture is a direct embodiment of a country's values and inspiration — a defining factor in its integrity. Letting our culture wither would be nothing less of a crime against the nation's identity. In this day and age, traditional cultures are forced to take a back seat, slowly engulfed by technological advances. But, there still exists a way in which one can utilize technology to preserve a culture. After all, traditions wouldn't burn as bright without the preservation of cultures, and what better way to do that than through technology?
