In an incident on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia, a calf was caught in a poacher's trap and its trunk, unfortunately, had to be removed.
The 1-year-old calf is among the 700 wild Sumatran elephants on the island and according to Agus Arianto, the head of the conservation agency in Aceh, the injured calf was in a very weak condition when it was found and the trap was still embedded in its severed trunk.
He also said that the poor calf appeared to have been abandoned by his other friends due to his deteriorating condition. "The trap is indeed used to hunt endangered animals for money," Arianto added in a statement. "We will work with the law enforcement agencies closely to assist in the investigation."
The coronavirus pandemic has further intensified poaching activities in Sumatra, according to conservationists, as villagers turn to hunting to survive the worsening economy.
