As we all know, the beautiful island of Penang is home to two bridges, the first bridge which is 13.5km long was opened in August 1985 and the second bridge which was opened in March 2014 is 24 km long making it the 2nd longest bridge in Southeast Asia.
Just like literally any other place in Malaysia, the bridges have made their way into many mysterious and creepy stories told by the locals. But I am all alone while writing this article, so let’s not get into the scary stories part.
*Turns on some religious music*
Anyway, recently, a TikToker with the username @adameji7 uploaded a video sharing the reason behind a recurring occurrence at the Penang Bridge and the video has gained a lot of attention.
As of now, it has over 300k views, 71k views and 1.3k comments.
According to the TikToker, if you’re visiting Penang and driving on the bridge to maybe go eat some famous cendol and you happen to come across a vehicle parked on the left lane of the bridge, there is a high possibility that the driver has ended their life by jumping off the bridge.
Here's the video:
Many netizens were shocked by the revelation and shared that they had always thought that the abandoned vehicles were spoiled and temporarily left there by their owners or maybe the owners had stopped their vehicle there for a few minutes while they took a break at the side of the bridge.
After knowing the truth, many netizens were shocked and sympathized with the vehicle owners.
Some locals even shared their experiences of being stuck in traffic at the bridge because the policemen were looking for the victim and one even shared that their own neighbour had done it before.
Some even started comparing the Penang bridges to the Korean Mapo Bridge which is a place in Korea that has seen more suicides than any other place in Korea.
The next time you head over to Penang via wither on of the bridges, take a moment of silence to pray for the departed as you pass through the bridge.
