A traffic police officer is facing memory loss after being involved in a crash with a teenage illegal racer, or mat rempit, more than a month ago. The incident occurred on July 28 at KM36 of the Kajang-Seremban Highway (LEKAS) during a Samseng Jalanan operation targeting illegal street racers.
According to a report by Harian Metro, the 17-year-old mat rempit was driving against the flow of traffic when he rammed into the officer at around 2 am. Both the officer and the illegal racer sustained injuries to their heads and legs and were immediately admitted to the Tuanku Jaafar Hospital for treatment.
Although the police officer was discharged on August 16, he has not yet resumed his duties due to ongoing struggles with memory loss. Negeri Sembilan Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief, Superintendent Muhammad Zaki Ramat, shared that the officer's condition is improving but remains concerning.
"He speaks very little and has difficulty remembering things. However, his colleagues and friends from the JSPT Negeri Sembilan team and the District Police Headquarters frequently visit him to provide support and assistance. We are all praying for his full recovery," Muhammad Zaki said, as quoted by NST.
Meanwhile, the teenage mat rempit involved in the collision is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which deals with reckless and dangerous driving. He is expected to be charged in court, along with his parents, once the investigation is complete.
