Newborn In Philippine Named After The Pandemic

02-May-2020
By Huan Lui

A healthy baby girl was born in Bacolod, a central Philippine city on April 13, and her parents Colline Tabesa (mother) and John Tupas (father) decided to name her Covid Marie.

“I wanted her name to remind us that Covid did not only bring us suffering. Despite all of this, a blessing came to us,” said the 23-year-old father.

The COVID-19 pandemic has taken nearly 240 thousand lives globally. Nevertheless, there are also babies being born amid this deadly pandemic, giving the parents a reason to show more gratitude towards life.

Weeks ago, 2 mothers in India also named their children after the pandemic. The babies — Corona Kumar and Corona Kumari — were called the unusual name, apparently by the encouragement of a doctor in the hospital.

“I told them this would help create awareness about the disease and remove the stigma around it,” said Dr. S.F. Basha, “To my surprise, they agreed.”
