Police brutality which killed George Floyd in the US, followed by the BLM Movement and a win for justice, was a historical event which set a precedent.
It called on the people of nations worldwide to scrutinize the brutality of police officers, toward alleged criminals and inmates. In Malaysia, that current fight is for one, A. Ganapathy.
A.Ganapathy was a 40-year-old man who died in the hospital after spending 12 days in police custody. Based on his bruises, he was said to have been beaten up by the police with a rubber hose, and passed on in the hospital after a month of being admitted.
On his deathbed, he told his mother that the police had beaten him, and a police report was then made on behalf of Ganapathy.
Despite the fact that the court had given him a 13-day remand for several crimes, his father noted that he had been clear of all alleged wrongdoings, a day before he was sent to the ICU.
Fighting for justice against Indians being tortured and murdered behind closed doors, the people of Malaysia, activists, a number of media platforms and youth leader Syed Saddiq, has called on the government to set up the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) to investigate the matter.
As the nation fights for justice and against racism, we stand in solidarity with Ganapathy, and urge the government to come out and to do what is right.
