A 35-year-old man was detained by the police on March 20th after they allegedly insulted Islam on social media by posting about socks that had the word "Allah" printed on them. The item was found for sale at a convenience chain, and the accused took to social media to express and now only less than a week later, the verdict is out.
The accused is sentenced to six months in jail with a fine of RM12,000. He will serve an additional three months in jail if he fails to pay the fine.
After being read the charge at court, under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, Chiok Wai Loong, the accused, entered a guilty plea.
Chiok begged for a reduced sentence, claiming he was only a "keyboard warrior".
He said in mitigation, "It did not occur to me that the comments would hurt the feelings of others," according to Sinar Harian.
