An old woman suffering from despair went off the deep end and assaulted her young daughter with a machete, causing severe damage to the latter.
According to Kosmo, the unintentional assault occurred at the 71-year-old suspect's residence in Felda Kerteh, Dungun, Terengganu, on Monday (June 10).
According to Dungun district police commander Superintendent Maizura Abdul Kadir, initial investigations showed that the offender was lying at the living room when she suddenly jumped up and attacked her disabled daughter in her room while she slept.
"The victim's brother heard her screaming of pain and grabbed the machete from the perpetrator as he found his sister drenched in blood, then reported the event to police.
"The 46-year-old woman sustained wounds on her neck and chest, needing five stitches," according to him.
Maizura went on to say that investigations found that the suspect not only suffered from depression after her husband died in April of last year, but she also frequently hallucinated.
The victim was taken to Dungun Hospital for treatment, while the suspect had a psychological assessment in Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital at Kuala Terengganu.
