A local construction worker has unfortunately met his untimely demise after falling from the fourth floor of a suspended elevator. The tragic incident took place in a local supermarket, yesterday. Slipping while carrying out maintenance work is believed to be the cause of a maintenance worker falling from the fourth floor of an elevator room and dying in an incident at a supermarket on Loke Yew Road yesterday.
The cause of death is believed to have been an unfortunate case of accidental slip during maintenance work. According to the Cheras District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Muhammad Idzam Jaafar, the police team from Balai Cheras went to the scene after they received a distress call at 11:07 AM from several witnesses and found a 32-year-old local man lying lifeless in an elevator hole in the basement.
"The fire brigade removed the victim from the elevator tunnel and the medical officer of the Tuanku Muhriz Chancellor's Hospital (HCTM) Cheras who was present at the scene confirmed that the victim had died," he said in a statement.
According to him, through the review of the closed-circuit television (CCTV) recordings, it was confirmed that the incident happened last Friday at around 11.55 AM. "However, nobody was alerted as the elevator wasn't operative and located far from the visitor route area," Muhammad Idzam explained.
The fire brigade retrieved the body from the elevator hole, which was estimated to be six feet deep from the elevator door, using ropes and stretchers. During the fatal incident, the victim was on his maintenance routine maintaining the elevator on the second floor of the building and had slipped into the elevator hole while stepping on the iron rubbish bin used as a base to descend from the main floor of the elevator.
