During this auspicious season, there is much to be grateful for. However, it appears that some individuals lack manners and cannot behave properly in public settings. A recent viral video circulating on social media depicts a Singaporean man engaged in an argument with staff at Mid Valley Southkey mall in Johor Bahru after allegedly breaking a display shelf by sitting on it.
The man, wearing a gray t-shirt and sunglasses, was strolling around the mall with his family when approached by mall staff. Despite their confrontation, the man walked away, speaking in Mandarin to the staff, asserting his knowledge of the law and claiming that the mall's display shelf had long been defective and had actually injured him. However, despite his assertions, the man continued to walk away, prompting staff to question why he was trying to evade them if he believed he was not at fault.
The mall staff then revealed they possessed video evidence and escorted the man back to the shop. According to the footage, the red display shelf, holding festive Chinese New Year items, had buckled, and the staff demanded payment for the damaged items that had fallen off the shelf. The man refused to pay, citing damage to the wrapping paper on the shelf, and also claimed to have sustained a waist injury in the incident. He informed the staff that if they insisted on payment, he could claim compensation for the injury, indicating he would refrain from legal action at that point.
Additionally, the man argued that the display shelf resembled seats and suggested that signs should have been posted to inform shoppers not to sit there. In response, one staff member clarified that the shelves were intended for displaying merchandise, and shoppers should have been aware not to sit on them.
As of now, Mid Valley Southkey mall has confirmed its awareness of the incident and is investigating the matter.
If you were one of the staff members, how would you have reacted to the man?
