Disneyland has been dubbed the happiest place on Earth for a while now and is undoubtedly the dream vacation destination for many of us. But, did you know it isn't always sunshine and rainbows? There have been some mishaps and mysteries happening in this magical land. Here are some spooky legends that Disney staff and visitors swear by:
1. Ashes Are Scattered Throughout the Parks
This is more fact than fiction. Many people love to honor their loved ones by (secretly) scattering their remains in the park. According to the staff, this happens at least once a month! They do get cleaned up as soon as they're discovered though.
2. The Crying Boy
What happens do the spirits of these scattered ashes then? It is said that a mother scattered her son's ashes in the Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland and the ghost of the boy has been crying and haunting the ride every since.
3. George of the Caribbean
According to sources, one of the construction crew working on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride - George, was killed on the job. His spirit is said to be haunting the ride among the pirates. Apparently, Disney employees will say "Good Morning, George" and "Good Night, George" each day or else the ride will break down throughout the day.
4. Matterhorn Ghost
Fact: A woman named Dolly Young was killed in a 1984 on the Matterhorn bobsled ride.
Mystery: Cast members frequently "hear" her when they walk the track. They even have a name for the section where Dolly died - "Dolly's Dip".
5. Monorail Runner
In 1966, a boy was hit and killed by the Disneyland monorail while running away from security after trying to sneak it. Until today, it is said that the teenager's ghost can be seen running alongside the train at night.
6. River Spirit
Then, in 1973, two brothers tried to stay on the island after the park closed. While trying to swim across the river to escape, the older brother drowned. Disney staff has since reported a ghost being seen near the waters.
7. Mr. One Way
This is actually one of the most famous tales and takes place in the famous Space Mountain ride. Legend says that he sits next to single riders on the ride and disappears by the end of the ride. The next time you have an empty seat beside you, take a good look!
8. Walt Disney's Ghost
Last, but not least, if you built the place, wouldn't you want to remain there and keep an eye out forever? There are many reports and incidents where staff believe they have seen Walt Disney's ghost. This includes everything from smelling him smoke, to seeing a train on the track that shouldn't be there, to seeing a spirit walking around.
There is also his apartment in Disneyland where the lights are left on as a tribute, but legend has it that before the tribute, staff members turned off the lights only to come back the next day finding it on!
If that's all not enough, check out this video that apparently catches some of the Disney ghosts on tape!
Hopefully, none of this has ruined the magic for you. Disneyland is still and amazing place to visit. Just be sure not to stay too long after hours and keep an eye and an ear out whenever you're there!
