We're all familiar with the blazing hot Sun in Malaysia. Although we're kind of "used to it", the combination of ultraviolet (UV) rays and tiny particles in the air can cause problems to our skin in the long run. Whether it's a blockage of our pores, collagen lost or pigmentation, we have no need for these skin aging defects. Therefore, Sun protection is crucial (but also vastly ignored and underrated). The World Health Organization (WHO) have suggested 3 steps to effective Sun protection and it's as easy as A-B-C!
A - Avoid
As the saying goes, "prevention is better than cure". Avoiding the sun is the best defense against it and it shouldn't be hard since we literally do it everyday just to avoid being drenched in sweat. Not to mention that you should be staying at home during MCO!
Keep in mind that from 12pm midday to 2pm is when there is a highest count of UV rays, and only after 4pm in the evening will it be greatly reduced. If you had to go outdoors when the sun is out and about, try walking in the shades of roofs, buildings or trees!
B - Block
Blocking in this case does not refer to sunblock and sunscreens rubbed on our skins, but actually physically blocking the sun's ray using the right tools such as umbrellas, hats, sunglasses, and of course, clothing!
A good umbrella, for example, would be one that has a dark surface or "Sun prevention" surface ON THE BOTTOM. This is because although we've blocked the UV rays coming directly from the sun, reflected UV rays (which we normally ignore) from the ground still carry 40-50% of damaging capabilities, and we definitely do not want the underside of the umbrella to be a focusing "satellite dish".
C- Cream
If you're planning on being outdoors for a long time, or will not have much physical Sun protection due to your clothing, then applying sunscreen is a must! Sunscreens are further differentiated into physical sunscreens and chemical sunscreens.
Physical Sunscreen: Using titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, physical sunscreens reflect and block UV rays like a shield. It is immediately effective on application and usually has a whiter cast. It's suitable for those who have more sensitive or oily skin.
Chemical Sunscreen: Using manmade blocking agents, chemical sunscreens absorb and dissipate UV rays instead. It requires about 30 minutes to functions as the thinner texture needs to be absorbed by the skin. Although not as suitable for sensitive skin, it is perfect for makeup wearers and daily users.
So, if you are even remotely worried about your skin's health and how you might look 20, 30 years down the road, then proper sun protection is a must. Avoiding (A) is the best cure while blocking (B) with physical objects is the first line of defense. If those aren't enough, then cream (C) will be the final line of defense. Remember, even if the sun isn't shining bright, you're still being exposed to UV rays!
