Since Jan. 26, the residents of Kampung Bakar Kapur (Sungai Petani) had been alarmed by a foul stench emitting from a nearby drain water. Tracking the source, they then discovered a polluted drain water in a bizarre shade of green!
According to a resident's finding, the incident was the result of an irresponsible toxic waste disposal from a housing project. Numerous big barrels were later found scattered at the site.
Another resident and the village head took it upon themselves to question the contractor, only to be given a mind-boggling answer- the waste was merely SHAMPOO used to clean the houses.
Following the doubtful finding, the Kedah Environmental Department (JAS) took over and conducted a further investigation, where they discovered and confiscated around 52 blue barrels- 22 of them previously contained paint. Cosmetic waste were also found nearby.
The water sample from the drain was taken for testing and the site has now been sealed temporarily, pending investigation.
It was reported that JAS has also called in the contractor representative for questioning, besides appealing the case to the Solid Waste And Public Cleansing Management Corporation (SWCorp) for further action.
