A 25-year-old man suffered severe injuries, losing fingers on both hands, in a firework mishap that occurred in front of his house in Seringgu Jaya, Merauke, South Papua, Indonesia, on December 22nd.
According to Ahmad Nurung, the Commissioner of Public Relations for the Indonesian Police, the incident took place while the victim was playing with fireworks before being rushed to the hospital.

"The victim is believed to have ignited expired fireworks. As a result, it exploded, causing injury to the victim's hands. This is because expired fireworks can lead to irregular explosions," he said.
Ahmad mentioned that the victim, identified only as J, was immediately taken to the hospital for further treatment as all his fingers were shattered due to the explosion.
Meanwhile, Ahmad warned merchants not to sell expired fireworks or firecrackers as they pose a significant danger.
"To all entrepreneurs, do not sell fireworks that have expired or have been in stock for a long time. Not only that, but the entire community also needs to be cautious when playing with fireworks, especially during the upcoming New Year celebrations," he added.
