A man in his fifties was arrested after slapping his wife in public at a shopping mall near Kota Warisan earlier this week. The incident reportedly occurred because the woman took too long to buy chicken rice, according to Sepang district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Norhizam Bahaman.
Sinar Harian reported that the suspect became angry when his wife did not return quickly after purchasing food from the mall. Police investigations revealed that the man had gone into hiding and was believed to have slept in his car before being detected by authorities.
"The victim was allegedly late in coming out, which angered the suspect before he proceeded to slap her," Norhizam said.
The suspect was arrested outside a clinic in Kota Warisan at around 10 a.m. yesterday. He has been remanded for three days as investigations continue.
The case came to light after the victim's sister lodged a police report, identifying the woman as her 35-year-old sibling. A 29-second video of the incident, which has been circulating online, shows the woman leaving the shopping mall before a man holding a child's hand approaches and slaps her in public while scolding her. The woman is later seen walking away from the scene.
The case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt. If convicted, the suspect could face up to one year in prison, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both.
