RapidKL has announced the introduction of a Womens Coach for the LRT Ampang/Sri Petaling line, effective 31 December 2024.
The company, in a Facebook post, urged all passengers to adhere to the rules but did not specify whether the initiative would extend to the LRT Kelana Jaya line.
However, the announcement has sparked a range of reactions on social media.
Some users welcomed the move but called on women to make full use of the designated coach to ensure smoother travel for other commuters.
‘RapidKL, please educate the women to fill the Womens Coach first before using other coaches. This will allow the men to board the train during rush hour’, one user wrote.
Concerns were also raised about the awareness of foreign passengers regarding the initiative. ‘Some foreigners may not comprehend it. The auxiliary police should remind them’, another comment suggested.
Meanwhile, some users criticized the move, with one suggesting additional charges for women using the designated coach.
‘This is discrimination. All female passengers should pay extra for the Womens Coach. They would utilise it if they had to pay more. Or better yet, make a gold class like those in Dubai’, the user wrote.
Others raised concerns about potential misuse of regular coaches by women.
‘Some of them put their bags on the seat in the regular coach. When we tell them about it, they dont like it’, another user remarked.
