Plagiarism is unfortunately something very common in the Korean music industry as a lot of times inspiration gets pushed a step further to down right copying.
Because news flash! Taking inspiration without giving any credits? Yep! Plagiarism too.
So in this case, would it be inspiration or plagiarism?
In their most recent comeback, K-Pop Girl Group NewJeans released their latest ep, with two news songs entitled 'Bubble Gum' and 'How Sweet'.
Only 3 hours after 'How Sweet' was released, it was suspected to be plagiarised off another song.
However, the most shocking thing for us Malaysians would be, it is being called a copy of Midnight Fusic 'Summer Love'.
Midnight Fusic is a local alternative rock band from Petaling Jaya, formed in 2013. First starting out with only cover songs over Youtube, they have now released multiple singles and EPs in the span of 7 years, which soon brought them to fame among Malaysians.
Their latest track, 'Summer Love' was released only two years ago in 2022.
Now, for the real question.
Are there actual similarities between 'How Sweet' and 'Summer Love'? Well, hear it for yourself here below...
Midnight Fusic, Summer Love
NewJeans, How Sweet
Now, what do you think? We personally feel, that there are similar sounds and singing styles between the two but is it a;
1. common vibe?
2. inspiration?
3. plagiarism?
As of now, both sides have not commented on this discourse but fans sure have! We have mixed reactions of all 3 from both Korean and Malaysian netizens.
Thoughts?
