Malaysian badminton player Goh Jin Wei recently shared a video on Instagram, showcasing her resourcefulness at the Olympic Village in Paris. Faced with high temperatures, she decided to set up her own air conditioning unit in her room.
In the video, Goh pans around her room, revealing a small standing fan before she begins the process of installing the portable air conditioner. She can be seen carefully running a hose from the air conditioning unit out of her window, which had to remain slightly open to allow the hot air to escape. Despite the usual practice of keeping windows tightly closed when using air conditioning, Goh had to improvise due to the situation.
The recent highest temperature in Paris reached 35°C (95°F) on July 25th. Goh's ingenuity in setting up her own cooling system highlights the challenges athletes can face while competing in different climates and the lengths they go to ensure comfort and focus on their performance.
