Times have changed, and compared to pursuing further education after secondary school, more young people nowadays are eager to enter the workforce early and become social media influencers or ride-hailing drivers.
According to a survey reported by Astro AEC News, 49% of 2022 SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) candidates have no intention of pursuing higher education and prefer to start working early.
Among the young individuals who have no interest in further studies, 34% aspire to become social media influencers, 26% are interested in joining the ride-hailing industry, and 22% have intentions of starting their own business or venturing into the food and beverage industry.
The survey involved 1,000 respondents aged between 18 and 20.
Among the 490 respondents who expressed no interest in continuing their studies, about one-third cited economic reasons, while approximately one-fifth believed that obtaining a higher education qualification no longer guarantees profitable returns as it used to.
This is primarily due to the issue of low wages, where some individuals with higher education qualifications earn even less than those without such qualifications.
According to Barjoyai Bardai, an economist from Universiti Tun Abdul Razak, suggested that the government encourage these SPM graduates who are not keen on pursuing higher education to consider engaging in modern agriculture. This approach would not only enhance the country's food security but also provide them with a monthly income ranging from RM5,000 to RM8,000.
