A boat with 202 Rohingya, comprising 152 men, 45 women, 4 boys and a girl, was detained yesterday (April 5) near a beach resort in Teluk Nibung.
According to a statement by Kedah and Perlis Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) deputy operations director Maritime Captain Zulinda Ramly, all the refugees have been taken to taken to the Kedah and Perlis MMEA lock-up in Bukit Malut. "They will be handed over to the Immigration Department for entering the country illegally," she said in the statement.
However, all 4 of the boat skipper and his crewmen escaped while at sea. They are suspected to be members of a syndicate smuggling in immigrants.
