What a dreary sight: the carcass of a female elephant was found in a heartbreaking condition on the side of Jalan Empangan Pedu near Kampung Pinang, Pedu in Kuala Nerang, Kedah, this morning.
One of the residents of the area, Resident Shazwan Ismail, 25, said the carcass of the poor animal was found by a neighbor who went out to tap rubber at about 7.30 AM. "The elephant was found dead in a sitting position and there were traces of blood along with his feces, possibly due to ingested poison or garden fertilizer," he explained.
"The villagers have been seeing a group of seven elephants roaming in the rubber plantation area lately for more than a month, there is a possibility that this female elephant belonged is one of the herds." Meanwhile, the director of the Kedah Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN), Jamalun Nasir Ibrahim, said his department received public information about the incident at about 8.30 AM.
At the moment, PERHILITAN is still investigating the incident and the relevant report regarding the cause of the elephant's death will be revealed once done.
