Former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad recently traded the halls of politics for the high-speed thrills of the racetrack, taking a drifting lesson at Sepang International Circuit. Accompanied by the circuit's Chairman, Tan Sri Mohamed Azman Yahya, Tun Dr. Mahathir, now 98 years old, showed that his passion for cars and motorsport remains as vibrant as ever.
During the session, Tan Sri Azman took the opportunity to ask Tun Dr. Mahathir about his vision for building Sepang International Circuit in the late 1990s. Reflecting on the decision, Tun explained that, at the time, Malaysia lacked significant tourist attractions that could draw both local and international visitors. He envisioned the circuit as a dynamic venue where people could experience the thrill of live motorsport events, rather than just watching them on television.
Tan Sri Azman also asked Tun if hosting the Formula One Grand Prix met his expectations. Tun Dr. Mahathir expressed immense pride in Malaysia being one of the first developing nations to host such a prestigious event, second only to Japan in Asia.
The location of the track was also part of a strategic investment. Tun elaborated that Sepang was chosen because of the availability of land near Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), making it a convenient and economically sound decision.
Despite his age, Tun Dr. Mahathir didn't just sit in the passenger seat. He eagerly took the wheel of an Audi, reaching speeds of up to 154 km/h, showing his enduring love for speed and proving that age is no barrier to excitement. The session marked an unforgettable moment, blending nostalgia for the track's inception with the exhilaration of high-speed action.
For everyone present, the day was filled with admiration and awe, watching a former political leader embrace motorsport with enthusiasm. Tun Dr. Mahathirs drift lesson serves as a reminder of his significant role in shaping Malaysia's motorsport landscape while demonstrating that his appetite for adventure remains undiminished.
