Dozens of carrier elephants 'set free' during COVID-19 crisis

03-Apr-2020

For the first time in 44 years, 78 jumbos in Maesa Elephant Camp in Chiang Mai, Thailand, are allowed to roam free on the grounds without having to wear the carriages on their backs.

Camp director, Anchalee Kalampichit, said that the decision to remove the metal and wooden carriages strapped to the elephants' backs was made because the number of tourists has declined and the park was ordered to close by the government due to the Coronavirus.

All 78 elephants in the camp are now liberated and will never have to wear the heavy carriages anymore!
