While French may be the language of love, English is world’s lingua franca. Regardless whether you’re Japanese or German, English has enabled people of different native languages to conversate under one language medium.
The ability to master English proficiently (both spoken and written) puts an individual on a higher pedestal. It’ll open you to a door of wondrous opportunities; good career and better social life.
Even if your English is on the less proficient note, don’t fret as there are ways you can improve it. Sure, you can’t expect to achieve that spotless eloquence like Bridgerton’s (neither can we, but we can dream about it right?), but over time your English will be better than ever!
1. Create a vocabulary journal
List down any words you can think of or come across, be it bombastic or simple words. Incorporate each word with their meaning so you can easily remember them. After all, you want to build up your vocabulary from time to time. Always keep track of your progress as this journal is a powerful tool you can use for daily conversation and at workplace/ school.
2. Practice makes perfect
Just as manners maketh man, practice also makes perfect. Enhance your pronunciation by reading the words out loud to yourself. If you’re unsure of the correct pronunciation, there’s nothing like Google or Youtube can’t help. Build up your speaking skills by incorporating English in your daily conversation, doesn’t matter if it’s just one sentence or 2-3 words. You’ll notice that your grammar will greatly improve over time as long as you have the confidence and willpower.
3. Indulge in English TV series/ movies
Visual learning is one of the great methods in improving your English and what’s the best way to do so other than binge watching tv series or movies. I’m a sucker for everything Netflix, especially series like The Big Bang Theory. If you want to enhance your listening and comprehension skills, it’s best to observe and listen closely to the characters’ conversations. This is also a brilliant way in helping you speak confidently.
4. Eat, sleep and breath books
Are you an avid reader? If you excitedly answer YES to the question, then half of the work is already done for you. There is an abundance of amazing reading materials out there so you’ll be spoiled for choice. Whether it’s novels, magazines, newspapers or even e-books; find the ones that will entice you and keep your eyes glued to the pages. Doesn’t matter if it’s fashion or crime related; a good read will never go to waste.
