Nigel Ng, the 32-year-old Malaysian-Chinese stand-up comedian and YouTuber who gained fame for his portrayal of "Uncle Roger" and is based in the UK, has sparked controversy involving Laos and Cambodia.
The Cambodian government has gone so far as to request a public apology for his remarks.
It was reported that the popular YouTuber had uploaded a video titled "Uncle Roger Make Adobo" on his YouTube channel, dedicated to the channel's 8 million subscribers.
In the video, he, portraying Uncle Roger, criticizes the cuisine of Cambodia and Laos, stating, "Not all Southeast Asian countries got good food, you know. You don't want food from Laos, Cambodia." Furthermore, he compares the cuisine of these two countries to a "shit version of Thai food," mocking their dishes as poor imitations of Thai cuisine.
Nigel's comments sparked strong discontent from citizens of both countries, flooding his social media accounts with critical comments. Some even created videos in defence of their respective cuisines.
In response, the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism condemned Nigel Ng's remarks and demanded a public apology. The authorities expressed disappointment in his misjudgment of Cambodian cuisine, stating that his words have had a negative impact on the country's culinary tourism efforts.
Cambodian authorities are collaborating with relevant departments to require Nigel Ng to issue a public apology to the people of Cambodia and to edit the video in question.
Earlier in 2023, in May, Nigel Ng faced backlash and social media bans from platforms such as Weibo, Douyin, and Bilibili for making satirical comments about the Chinese government.
