Out of 142 cities, Kuala Lumpur has risen 16 spots to rank as the 73rd smartest city in the world. This is in line with the Institute for Management Development's (IMD) Smart City Observatory's 2024 Smart City Index.
According to Free Malaysia Today, KL was placed 89th the previous year. The study recognized several of KL's excellent efforts, such as the convenience of online ticket purchases and the availability of online job ads that facilitate job searching.
The city's health and safety system was also praised in the study. It stated that "making medical appointments online has improved access" and that "online scheduling has made public transportation easier to use" are examples of mobility structures.
According to the research, KL's "most concern" concerns include cheap housing, air pollution, traffic congestion, and corruption.
As stated by Bruno Lanvin, president of Smart City Observatory, communities need to develop plans to withstand the test of a more unpredictable future.
Additionally, he stated that the value of trust and sound governance is rising and that artificial intelligence will play an increasingly important role in the planning and administration of cities.
In a statement posted on the IMD website, he stated, "AI can help cities to become more human-centric, counterintuitive as it may sound."
In 2024, Zurich was ranked first for the fifth time in a row by the Smart City Index. Oslo, Canberra, Geneva, and Singapore were the next cities in line.
