Out of the five senses, most people are most afraid of losing the ability to see. Eyesight is precious and often times we took it for granted. Let’s see what we can do to protect our eyes.
1. Wear sunglasses
It’s always sunny in Malaysia, protect your eyes from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays outdoors by wearing sunglasses. Shield your eyes from UV rays to reduce the risk of cataracts, pinguecula, and other eye diseases. Choose a pair of sunglasses that blocks 99% to 100% of UVA and UVB rays
2. Exercise
Frequent light exercises such as yoga and brisk walking could reduce age-related macular degeneration. Practice eye exercises to prevent strains on the eyes. Get up after every 2 hours of work and take a 15-minute break to give the eyes a rest.
3. Have a balanced diet
Antioxidants were found to reduce the risk of cataracts, so add more fruits and dark green leafy vegetables to your diet. Having fish that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as salmon could slow down the degeneration of our eyes.
4. Take breaks
Take occasional breaks to look away from the digital screens that we are staring at. Instill the 20-20-20 rule into our daily life—for every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
5. Prevent dry eyes
We tend to blink less often when we work with computers and phones. It will lead to dry and strained eyes. Be more conscious of our screen time and make a habit of blinking more often when we stare at the computer or phones. If all else fails, use eye drops to relieve the dry eyes.
Now that we reached the end of the article, give your eyes a well-deserved rest!
