Animals are not purchased goods that you can simply 'return if this does not fit your lifestyle'.
Unfortunately for most local animal shelters and rescue orgnisations here in Malaysia, this is something that happens too often to count.
Just recently, Ruff Love Malaysia, an animal rescue organisation, shared via Instagram account, the story of a Malaysian woman who adopted a dog from them.
Fast forward a year later, the woman stated that she no longer wanted to keep the dog and would 'leave it by the roadside' if they didn't take it back.
'Teh' is a fully grown dog, who is about over two years old now with the sweetest and cutest face ever. In an older post by the organisation, it is said that 'Teh' was rescued after being abandoned in the rain, by the roadside. They knew she was abandoned then as she knew her basic commands.
Ruff Love must've felt overjoyed when Teh was finally adopted.
However, some pet owners, are terrible pet owners.
Claiming that she has a job posting overseas, Malaysian woman says "it is a last minute urgent posting that I can't refuse. It is either I take it or lose my job. Can I 'return' it back to you? "
Ruff Love Malaysia then informs the owner that they unfortunately cannot take Teh back as at the moment, they are currently full.
The organisation even offers to allow the owner, to bring Teh to their adoption drive however, informing her that if Teh isn't adopted at the drive, she would need to take Teh home herself as they do not have the space to accommodate.
What the owner says after has most definitely shocked the organisation and the public.
Owner says "leave her by the roadside? I need to pack up and leave by next Friday"
She then says that she will have no choice but to abandon the dog as time is not on her side.
Knowing that this is never the option and that Teh would receive the same fate from 2 years ago, Ruff Love requested for the owner to bring Teh in ASAP and that they will figure it out.
Teh was returned with some skin issues and they are now in the process of getting her healthy and happy again. Ruff Love says " It is not easy for dogs to be abandoned, no matter the circumstances. Teh's spirit is not what it used to be, and we are trying our best to ensure that she never feels abandoned ever again."
