Understanding 5G: The Future is Fast

24-Dec-2020
By Sherilyn

Our lives are becoming increasingly mobile, and we are consuming more data each year. As we become more entangled and connected to the internet and its offerings, the need for greater connectivity and faster data download and upload speeds become more prominent – and that’s where 5G, the next generation of cellular technology can step in.

Over the past few years, 5G has been one of the biggest buzzwords in tech. So, what exactly is 5G? As the name implies, it is the fifth generation of cellular technology, and it offers faster speeds and lower latencies across its networks. More than that, however, is the promise of unprecedented change like never before; from your phone to your home internet and sparking technological advancements like self-driving cars and remote surgery. 5G will pull us into an age of rapid advancement, and we should get ready for this revolutionary change.

Why 5G Matters to You

5G, while industry- and world-changing, will also transform the smart devices in your pocket. To truly understand the capabilities of 5G ahead of its availability, we can first turn towards 4G. The advent of 4G changed how we consumed information. It is what most our phones currently use, and it offers truly fast mobile internet, making a range of applications like social media networks and streaming services possible on smartphones and tablets. It gave rise to the app economy, allowing us access to video streaming, ride sharing, food delivery, and a range of services we have come to know and love today.

5G promises to take things even further, with faster speeds and latency that can see mobile internet being on par with, or even faster than home WiFi. As pioneers of the 5G experience, brands like Samsung is paving the way to the future and bringing Malaysians along for that journey. Excavating the possibilities of 5G, we can expect to see the expansion of the mobile ecosystem to new industries that will bring forth a range of technologies we have only dreamed of so far. With new up-and-coming technologies from the likes of Samsung, lifestyles that include boundless extended realities (XR) for true virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences, seamless IoT capabilities for true personalisation, instant cloud access for greater collaboration, local interactive content for immersion are only the tip of the iceberg.

What 5G Brings to You

Super-fast internet speeds will change the way we live, work, and socialise. Everything we can do with our smartphones now, we will be able to do much better, and much quicker than ever before with 5G technology. Several ways we can enjoy 5G include:

• Videoconferencing as if you are really in the same room with the person you are reaching out too. With high resolution videos and zero lag, video calls will connect you with your friends in real-time.

• Gaming will be truly more immersive, as virtual (VR) and augmented reality (AR) tech leveraging on 5G speeds pull you deeper into the game for a literal out-of-this-world experience.

• Streaming, whether its live video streams or episodes of your favourite TV series will provide you with immersion like never before. With incredible speeds only possible with 5G, stream up to resolutions of 4K and 8K seamlessly with no buffer time and engage with content like never before.

• Shopping will be personalised and quicker, with your favourite brands predicting your needs and likes. With VR and AR, you may even be able to try on clothes, change your hairstyle, or see how furniture fits in your room, all from the comforts of home.

• Travelling will be safer and more efficient, as autonomous cars become a reality.

• Working and collaborating with teams will be even better, as seamless file-sharing of all sizes can be achieved with simply the push of a button.

Ultimately, while we may not be able to fathom 5G in its full capacity, the next generation of wireless connectivity is definitely poised to revolutionise the way we communicate, consume, and create.

Bringing 5G to You

Your excitement for 5G may understandably be palpable. However, do note that not all current phones are able to support 5G technology. Nevertheless, as the 5G rollout timeline progresses, more smartphones and carrier subscriptions will become available, and 5G technology together with its compatible devices permeate our mainstream.

Helming this advancement is Samsung, who has been working, updating, and optimising its technology to fully enjoy the capabilities of 5G. For instance, the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G is the smartphone with power rivalling, or even besting PCs. This device packs the fastest processor in the Galaxy series, with HyperFast data for low-latency video calls and gaming, without buffering, stuttering, or even a surprise appearance by the loading wheel. The Galaxy S20 FE 5G, also boasts lightning fast speeds in connectivity, allowing you to game on in real time with minimal lag and experience crystal clear communications with your friends.
