The uninhabitable island of Oshima, is a hot spot for the supernatural. Oshima island may seem to be a piece of paradise for those who seek seclusion but do not be fooled by that. The island is completely bare except for a lighthouse, shrine and storage shed.
Oshima island is quite close to the Tojinbo cliffs which is situated across from the island and these cliffs are well-known spot for committing suicide. It is very often that bodies will wash ashore on Oshima island. Thus, legends and myths arise.
There is a legend that says, if you walk around the island counterclockwise, you will die. It is said that if walking counterclockwise on the island, you will be transported to the land of the dead. Some say a horrible curse will be put upon you. While others say, you will be landing in a pile of bodies of those who committed suicide by jumping off the cliff.
Either way, the legend is enough to raise the hairs on our arms. Brrr!
Someone once told a terrifying story of those who walked counterclockwise on the island. There was a man who ignored the warnings and walked counterclockwise. While getting ready to drive home, his GPS started to malfunction. A moment after that, a black clump hit the windshield of his car.
After looking into it, it was not just a black clump. It was the head of a person and there were two eyes staring back at him.
Although Oshima island is uninhabited and is filled with hair-raising legends, it is a popular place for sightseeing among locals and tourists. The only thing connecting Oshima island to the mainland is a long, red cement bridge.
The bridge also holds some of the chilling myths where some say that if you cross it at midnight, the arms of the dead will attach themselves to you and pull you into the deep waters. Every so often, decapitated heads appear on the bridge.
Despite all those ghost stories, people still go there for sightseeing and just across the ocean was a clear view of the Echizen-Kaga Kaigan Quasi-National Park. The locals refer to it as 'Island of the Gods' because the view is just mesmerizing to those who see it. Nature is said to have remained untouched for over a thousand years.
Whether the legends are true or just another ghost story told by the people who want to give a good scare, would you go and visit Oshima island? Tell us in the comments.
