SHOCKING: "Why Must It Be In English? We Can't Read BM Is It?" M'sians Criticize Bangi Library For Using English Word On Neon Sign

The Selangor Public Library (PPAS) located in the Hulu Langat District of Bandar Baru Bangi faced criticism for incorporating English on one of its signboards. Specifically, the library displayed the word "library" on its neon sign, prompting dissatisfaction from a Facebook user who argued that the sign should have been in Malay.

Voicing their concerns on Facebook, the user highlighted the perceived inappropriateness of using English, particularly in an area where the majority of the population is Malay. They questioned why the sign was not in BM, given that nearly 90% of the residents in Bandar Baru Bangi are Malay. The user urged others to join in addressing the issue to preserve the national identity.

The criticism was not isolated, as another Facebook user also expressed surprise and disappointment upon seeing the English sign at the library. He emphasized the importance of promoting the Malay language, especially in public institutions like libraries.

Despite facing backlash from netizens, the user clarified his stance, asserting that BM should be the predominant language on signboards in Malaysia. He argued that while other languages could be included, Malay holds special significance.

In contrast to his perspective, the primary signboard of PPAS is in Malay. However, the issue of incorporating English on the neon sign sparked debates among netizens. While some raised concerns about the use of English, others were indifferent, suggesting that bilingual signage is common in local public libraries.

For instance, another user pointed out that the Terengganu State Public Library also uses bilingual signboards.
