Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Thailand has made over THB12 million (RM1.5 million) thanks to Moo Deng, the queen.
The two-month-old pygmy hippopotamus has been a livestream star since she became viral on the Internet due to her funny facial expressions and lively personality, drawing admirers from all around the world.
According to Narongwit Chodchoy, director of the zoo, Moo Deng will attract more tourists, particularly those from South Korea, China, and Japan.
Reported by Bangkok Post, the zoo observed a spike in ticket sales between September 1 and September 19, raking in over THB12 million (RM1.5 million), as tourists went to see the young hippo.
Additionally, the zoo has launched a 24-hour livestream with Moo Deng and other animals on zoodiolive.com. Just on September 20, 44,000 people watched her shenanigans.
When the zookeeper is cleaning Moo Deng's pen between 7:45 and 9 a.m., she can be seen running and hopping around, which is when most people go to see her. She can only be viewed for five minutes by guests; after that, they must wait in line once more.
More sales are predicted, with estimates of THB200 million (RM25 million), as more tourists are set to pay Moo Deng a friendly visit.
Besides just her appearances at the zoo, a line of clothing including hippo-printed T-shirts and jeans is being introduced as well -all thanks to Moo Deng's popularity!
