The Cardinal Elects are heading to Rome to start the Conclave to vote for the next pope after the passing of Pope Francis, and a Malaysian represent will be there too!
Yes, you read right. Cardinal Datuk Seri Sebastian Francis from Johor will be one out of the 135 electors in Vatican City casting his vote for the next leader of the Catholic Church.
The 73yo was the Bishop of Penang since 2011, before upgrading to Cardinal back in 2023. He is the second Malaysian to be given the honor after the late Anthony Soter Fernandez.
Malaysia's presence at the conclave reflects Pope Francis' push to diversify the College of Cardinals by appointing priests from regions historically underrepresented in the Catholic Church's leadership.
According to sources, of the 135 eligible electors, about 110 were appointed by Pope Francis himself, many of whom reflect his vision of a more inclusive and justice-oriented Church.
So, it's safe to say Malaysians will be watching patiently and proudly!
